“Tell us one thing you hope people say about you.”¹
On the WordPress platform that I use, I see writing prompts off and on – sparking answers to questions that might be along the lines of, “where would your dream vacation take you?” and “if you could learn to ski, would you?” and “what is a memorable wildlife encounter?” This prompt stood out though. Many of us, and I believe this has to do with how we are made, want to hear, WELL DONE! Aren’t there things you have wanted to hear from your boss, your friends, your family, depending on who it is? Things like, “Good job.” “Great shot.” “I love you.” In a fallen world, perhaps there can be a disconnect between love and the expression of it, or a disconnect between a job well done and the acknowledgement of it.
So what does God have to say to people who are left asking in a void that may seem too silent, what do others say about me? The most important and definitive voice is not what someone else says about us but rather what God says about me. For the believer in Christ, we do not have to keep guessing or hoping that someone will say something kind or good about us. The verdict from God is unanimous and that is the one that matters most: we are loved by our Father; we are adopted into God’s family because of what Jesus has done for us. We are forgiven; we are preserved. We are protected and empowered to fight the fights of the one who laid down in his life for us
For those in Christ, we have the strength, the light, and the word of the God who rules over the waves of the sea, the God in whom there is no darkness, and who never has told or will tell a lie. Amidst uncertainty this is certain: his words are true. We can trust them. His words will not pass away and he will never change or fail or fade.
