Foreword: This is a piece of historical fiction in the form of a letter which I wrote for my final portfolio in an English class last year. My intention was to imagine and recreate missionary Mary Slessor’s response to criticism of her outreach, while also maintaining historical consistence. As we watch 21st century America pursuing comfort over truth and recognize this tendency in our own hearts, Mary’s bold witness challenges us to reevaluate our priorities. She was not perfect, but she sought to follow her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and share his love with others – even at great personal risk.
